As a Gen-Z university student majoring in Management at the American University in Dubai, I am aware of the importance of work-life balance and job satisfaction. It is crucial to look after both our physical and mental health in order to maintain motivation and reach our objectives in the fast-paced dynamic world of today. In this blog, I will be sharing my experiences and thoughts on how well-being increases motivation and how employees' happiness and health can boost their performance. I will also be discussing some trusted ways to balance entertainment and education to stay both motivated and satisfied.
How is Business even related to Psychology?
Although they may appear to be two quite separate areas, psychology and business are really deeply interconnected. Business professionals may obtain a better understanding of human motivation and behavior by studying psychology, which will ultimately help them make better decisions and accomplish their objectives more successfully.
Positive psychology is one field of psychology that has attracted a lot of interest lately. Instead of just addressing pathology and dysfunction, positive psychology emphasizes encouraging pleasure and well-being. Numerous advantages for people have been demonstrated, including increased resilience, strengthened bonds with other people, and higher performance.
Further research has demonstrated a significant link between employee wellness and workplace effectiveness. Employees that are satisfied and in good health typically work harder, are more engaged, and have a greater drive to succeed. On the other side, employees who experience mental health issues or who are stressed out and burnt out are more likely to disregard their job, make mistakes, and perform badly.
The findings indicate that organizations of all sizes should make investing in employee well-being a top priority. This may take many different forms, such as granting access to wellness programs and mental health services, giving flexible work schedules, fostering a friendly and upbeat workplace atmosphere, and even making them participate in well-being workshops conducted by professionals or students. Luckily I had the chance to conduct a workshop there and be part of this win-win situation!
Businesses can establish a more effective and long-lasting healthy workplace by emphasizing happiness and well-being rather than just production and productivity. If they experience encouragement, inclusion, and appreciation from their employer, employees are more likely to remain with the organization for a long time and contribute more to its success.
Then, what is the connection between Well-being and Motivation?
The self-determination theory (SDT) is a widely recognized psychological theory that enables us to comprehend motivation and the ways in which it impacts our well-being. SDT claims that there is a continuum of motivation, extending from extrinsic to intrinsic. While doing something for money or recognition is considered extrinsic motivation, doing something for personal satisfaction and happiness is considered intrinsic motivation.
According to a Research, intrinsic motivation is highly correlated with happiness and improved work performance. We are more likely to love our work, be innovative, and take initiative when we are intrinsically driven. As a consequence, both in our personal and professional lives, we feel happier and more fulfilled.
Extrinsic motivation, on the contrary, could lead to burnout and discontent since it can make us feel as though we are just working for external benefits rather than our own happiness. Such can make it extremely challenging to stay motivated and involved in our work and could result in feelings of disillusionment and frustration.
To be able to maximize intrinsic motivation, people should discover practical ways to foster it throughout their daily lives. Establishing individual objectives, pursuing interests, finding own's passions, and finding the meaning and purpose in our job, are all ways to do so. Additionally, managers should create and assure a working environment that values intrinsic motivation and encourages employees to find meaning in their careers.

The idea of balancing entertainment and education is one that may be advantageous to people from all walks of life. Finding a good balance between the two may help you achieve your objectives and enhance your overall well-being, whether you are a student, a professional, or someone seeking personal improvement.
Many people believe that success can only be achieved through intensity focusing on either education/work or entertainment. However, this could only result in burnout and a lack of motivation. It is crucial that you incorporate leisure time into your schedule, in order to help you recharge and remain motivated.
Participating in activities that encourage both learning and enjoyment is one method to attain balance. It is both educational and entertaining to read a book or watch a documentary about a subject that interests you. Another way to feel connected to others and sense social support is to join a club or a group that is tied to a hobby or interest.- it can be a WhatsApp group, do not let the physical appearance of the word "club" intimidate you or scare you away.
Moreover, frequent breaks from studying or working might assist lower stress levels and boost productivity. Regular pauses might actually enhance performance and reduce fatigue, according to Studies. if we take the time to relax and participate in things that make us happy, we will have a higher chance of returning to our job or studies feeling reenergized and motivated.
Balance can also be hampered by The fear of missing out (FOMO). When we focus solely on work or education, it is easy to feel like we are missing out on significant events or experiences. However, incorporating entertaining activities in our daily lives will lessen FOMO and help us appreciate the here, now, and then.
Our mental health can be boosted by incorporating entertainment into our daily life. Spending some time unwinding and having fun will result in feeling less stressed and anxious, sleeping better, and feeling better overall. The greater the balance the more the achievements.
The Theory of Balancing Entertainment and Education
As a college student, it can be challenging to balance education and entertainment. With assignments piling up and exams looming, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed out. However, finding a healthy balance between work and entertainment is crucial for maintaining motivation and achieving success.
Engaging in activities that encourage growth and learning while still giving time for relaxation and enjoyment is how entertainment and education may be balanced. We may lower our stress levels, increase our productivity, and maintain our motivation by introducing entertainment into our everyday life. Finding a balance is even more crucial given that studies have shown that taking pauses may actually increase performance and decrease weariness.
In fact, the concept of balancing entertainment and education is not new. Many successful people have recognized the importance of relaxation and enjoyment in achieving their goals. Elon Musk, the current CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter, for instance, has stated that he spends about 80% of his time on engineering and design and the remaining 20% on reading and other leisure activities.
Balancing entertainment and education is not only essential for college students but also for working professionals. In a fast-paced work environment, taking breaks to engage in relaxing activities can help reduce stress and prevent burnout. Furthermore, happy and healthy employees typically perform better at work and are more driven to accomplish their objectives. I personally, make sure to watch my comfort show, or read pages of my current read, I admit sometimes I do it only for the sake of doing it and sustaining my routine, even when I have a big project or exam the following morning. I am a true believer in Maxwell Maltz's 21/90 rule of building habits.
I understand the urgency of maintaining a balance between balancing entertainment and education since I intend to be a thought leader in the field of management. I believe taking breaks to watch a movie, read a book, or hang out with friends has kept me motivated and focused. But it's crucial to keep in mind that moderation is the key to striking a balance. Too much leisure time can be detrimental and encourage procrastination. Incorporating entertainment into our daily lives can also help reduce the fear of missing out (FOMO). By taking breaks to enjoy entertainment, we can reduce FOMO and feel more satisfied with our choices.
From a personal experience: I was able to raise my GPA to more than 3.8 for two consecutive years only after I started balancing entertainment and education. Even during my final I have to do at least one fun activity to keep maintain my well-being and reduce stress. So I am able to “Keep Swimming” (IEWU)

In this matter, my daily planner, which has a TO-DO list, was an immense help.

To refresh your body and mind, you can go for a little stroll, get a nutritious lunch, or just sit in silence for a short period of time. The rule of 25 minutes to 5 minutes is very effective in my experience.
Drawing lines between work and pleasure is another useful suggestion for balancing entertainment and education. It is essential to refrain from accessing your email or social media during your downtime. This will guarantee that you can focus entirely on your chosen activity and eliminate any distractions. I suggest turning off all notifications and choosing the deliver "silently" option, after watching The Social Dilemma and understanding how algorithms work, turning off distractions was my first decision.
Mindfulness is key component of balancing entertainment and education. It's essential to give your chosen activity your complete attention and to be totally present in the moment. You'll be able to relax and take in the moment later, now focus on what you are doing, and what you're doing only.
Practicing self-care is a useful method too, you'll be more motivated and concentrated if you take good care of your physical and mental health by eating well, exercising frequently, spending quality time with friends and family, and getting enough sleep. In addition to boosting your energy and happiness, taking care of yourself will further help you achieve a balance of entertainment and education.
All in all, well-being and motivation are closely interlinked, and balancing entertainment and education is essential for achieving both. As a Gen-Zier, job satisfaction, and work-life balance are crucial for my personal and professional growth. By applying the self-determination theory and balancing entertainment and education, I have been able to maintain a healthy work-life balance and stay motivated to achieve my goals.

In my opinion, understanding the significance of well-being and work-life balance is essential for success in both personal and professional paths. To increase productivity and job satisfaction, employers should prioritize investing in the well-being of their employees and motivate them to balance entertainment and education or work, before investing in anything else.

We may achieve the ideal balance between entertainment and education/work by setting limits, making time for self-care, and planning our calendars. We will feel less stressed, be more driven, and have better work satisfaction as a result. It is important to realize that taking care of our well-being requires more than just taking time off from work to relax; it also necessitates making an effort to implement positive behaviors in our daily routines.
